The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced concessions for handling physical claims of deceased members whose Aadhaar details are not linked to their accounts.
Announced on May 17, 2024, this amendment updates the previous order from September 9, 2020, regarding claim settlements in the absence of a Universal Account Number (UAN) when an employee passes away.
However, the concession is subject to approval from the Officer in Charge (OIC) through an e-office file.
The file must detail the verification procedures confirming the deceased’s membership and the legitimacy of claimants. This protocol, along with directed additional due diligence, aims to minimize fraudulent withdrawals.
The relaxation of Aadhaar requirement applies when UAN details are correct but incomplete in the UID database. This facilitates smoother processes for members possessing accurate UAN data.
“EPFO stated that in situations where Aadhaar data is accurate but incomplete or inaccurate in the UAN, field offices must adhere closely to the guidelines specified in Paragraphs 6.9 and 6.10 of JD SOP version-2 dated 26.03.2024.”
“This process entails rectifying the data in the UAN, seeding, and validating/authenticating the Aadhaar, aligning with the instructions provided in the Circular dated 24.09.2020,” EPFO said.
The fundamental problem arises from discrepancies between the information stored in EPFO’s UAN database, containing members’ provident fund details, and the UID database, housing pertinent Aadhaar information.

The new EPFO regulations target discrepancies between a member’s details in the UAN and UID databases, particularly in cases of death. Inaccurate Aadhaar details in the UID database complicate verification and processing of physical claims for provident fund amounts. Delays in disbursing dues to nominees or legal heirs result.
The latest rules allow physical claims for death cases without Aadhaar seeding, simplifying the process. While Aadhaar seeding is recommended, EPFO prioritizes timely fund disbursement to beneficiaries, permitting alternative verification methods with OIC approval.
