
One of the World’s largest Social Security Organisations, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has shared information about EPF Advance on illness
Eligibility for EPF advance withdrawal due to medical reasons
Certain conditions have to be fulfilled for advance withdrawal of Employees’ Provident Fund:
- The employees can receive the expense for the medical treatment including the Self and Family Members.
- EPF members can avail of Non-refundable Advances.
Conditions
- The advances can be availed in case of Hospitalization for more than one month.
- The facility can be availed in case of Major Illness or major Surgery.
Amount: The basic wages and DA for six months or employees’ share whichever is less.
Requirement for the claim: The member needs to submit a Self Declarations to avail of this facility.
The EPFO members can visit the EPFO website and apply for advances.

Recently, EPFO came with another extension of the deadline for employers to upload wage details of employees opting for higher pensions till 31st May 2024. Earlier the deadline was December 31, 2023.
On January 3, 2024, the Ministry of Labour & Employment, which administers EPFO, stated that more than 360,000 applications were still pending with employers for processing. Therefore, the date for higher pension application processing has been extended further by another five months to May 31, 2024, it said.
Earlier an online facility was made available by EPFO for submitting Applications for Validation of Options/Joint Options for pension on higher wages. The facility was for eligible pensioners/members in compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court order dated 04.11.2022.
