Tata to add up to 45,000 employees at iPhone parts plant in Tamil Nadu
The plant in the industrial town of Hosur, in Tamil Nadu state, will hire as many as 45,000 women workers within 18 to 24 months as it sets up new production lines, people familiar with the matter said.

An Indian multinational conglomerate, Tata Group is planning to multiply the number of employees at its electronics factory in southern India.

However, there are only a small fraction of iPhones and their components are made in India. The Tata Group is among the Indian companies trying to benefit from Apple. The company is diversifying its supply chain beyond China. This step will create employment in the country.

However, the company that makes iPhone components will add tens of thousands of workers as part of a push to win more business from Apple Inc.

Separately, according to reports in September Tata Group is in discussions with Wistron to create an electronics manufacturing joint venture to assemble iPhones in India.

The plant in the industrial town of Hosur is spread over more than 500 acres in the state of Tamil Nadu. This plant hired about 5,000 women in September. These hiring included those from the indigenous tribal communities, the people said, declining to be named as the staffing plans aren’t public. The plant will hire as many as 45,000 women workers within 18 to 24 months as it sets up new production lines.

The factory, which produces iPhone housings or the cases which hold the device together, currently employs about 10,000 workers, most of them women.

According to sources, women in the Hosur factory only get a gross salary of 16,000 rupees ($194) per month. This salary is nearly 40% higher than the Indian industry average for workers who use hands or tools.

The Tata group also provides free food and accommodation within the campus. Additionally, Tata is among the companies that provide training and education.
