I worked 15 hours a day, slept on office table- A M Naik

PTI | L&T chairman emeritus A M Naik on Friday said he worked 15 hours a day and slept on the office table after long days at work, as he built the engineering giant in over five decades.

In remarks that come amid an uproar caused by N R Narayana Murthy‘s suggestion asking youngsters to put in 70 hours of work per week to build the nation, Naik said after putting in 15 hours a day at work, he used to go back home and think about L&T for another one hour.

A M Naik credited former Defence Minister George Fernandes for helping save L&T during a corporate takeover battle mounted by the Birlas, and added that the politician’s socialist leanings made him a big believer in not letting a company go into the hands of a big business house.

Editor’s View on 70 Hours Work Week

Working for 70 hours per week is a significant commitment and generally exceeds the typical full-time work schedule in many countries. In the United States, for instance, a standard full-time workweek is typically considered 40 hours.

Working 70 hours a week equates to approximately 10 hours per day for a seven-day workweek. Such an extended work schedule might be prevalent in certain industries or for individuals who hold multiple jobs, are self-employed, or are under specific work-related demands.

While some may willingly take on such a workload, it’s essential to consider the potential effects on mental and physical health, work-life balance, and overall well-being. Extended work hours might lead to burnout, increased stress, and a lack of time for personal activities, family, and relaxation.

Many countries have labor laws that regulate the maximum number of hours employees can work in a week and mandate rest periods to protect workers’ health and ensure a work-life balance. These laws might vary from country to country or state to state.

Maintaining a balance between work and personal life is crucial for overall health and productivity. If working such long hours becomes overwhelming or affects your well-being, it might be essential to explore ways to manage or adjust your work schedule.
