A Canadian multinational e-commerce company, Shopify has announced that there is a rule that no meetings at all can be held on Wednesdays.
Kaz Nejatian has shared the information through an official Twitter handle and said, “Meetings are a bug. Today, we shipped a fix to this bug at @Shopify. To start 2023, we’re canceling all Shopify meetings with more than two people. Let’s give people back their maker time. Companies are for builders. Not managers.”
Shopify is also pushing a “no judgment zone,” urging employees to cancel meetings as they see fit. “The best thing founders can do is subtraction,” Chief Executive Officer Tobi Lutke, who co-founded the company, said in an emailed statement.
“It’s much easier to add things than to remove things. If you say yes to a thing, you actually say no to every other thing you could have done with that period of time. As people add things, the set of things that can be done becomes smaller. Then, you end up with more and more people just maintaining the status quo”, Tobi Lutke added.
“Over the years, we’ve seen excess meetings creep back into our day-to-day,” Kaz Nejatian, Shopify’s vice president of product and chief operating officer, said in an emailed reply to questions.
“We know no one joined Shopify to sit in meetings”, Kaz Nejatian, added.
Shopify has said it will delete nearly 10,000 events from employee calendars, thereby clearing up over 76,500 hours. The company is also encouraging employees to leave large, distracting Slack groups.
Shopify has said the company is providing a two-week scheduling freeze. The company has also suggested that employees should “be critical” about what goes on their calendars.
Shopify has made commerce better for everyone with a platform and services that are engineered for reliability while delivering a better shopping experience for consumers everywhere.
The company powers millions of businesses in more than 175 countries and is trusted by brands such as Allbirds, Gymshark, PepsiCo, Staples, and many more.
