Zepto to Relocate Headquarters from Mumbai to Bengaluru
Zepto has mandated that all employees relocate to Bengaluru by the end of November or early December.

Quick commerce startup Zepto, known for its rapid growth and revenue surge, is making a significant shift. The company is preparing to move its base from Powai in Mumbai to Sarjapur in Bengaluru—the tech capital of India.

Consolidating Operations

Zepto’s decision to move its headquarters stems from the desire to streamline operations. Here are the key details:

The Mumbai-Bengaluru Transition: Zepto already has an office in Bengaluru, where its tech and product teams operate. Now, the company aims to bring all corporate roles under one roof by relocating its Mumbai-based employees to Bengaluru.

The move will consolidate its 1,700-1,800 employees, fostering collaboration and synergy.

Cost Savings and Efficiency: Zepto expects to save approximately Rs 40-50 lakh in rent per month due to the shift.

The company will relinquish its existing properties—a large 80,000-90,000 square feet space in Mumbai and a smaller 30,000-40,000 square feet office in Bengaluru.

Instead, Zepto will move into a spacious 1.5 lakh square-feet property in Bengaluru.

Impact on Employment and Jobs

The relocation has implications for Zepto’s workforce:

  1. Employee Relocation:
    • Zepto has mandated that all employees relocate to Bengaluru by the end of November or early December.
    • The company will bear the relocation expenses for willing employees.
    • Approximately 90% of the Mumbai-based employees have already expressed their willingness to move.
  2. Estimated Costs:
    • The one-time relocation expense is estimated to be around Rs 3-4 crore.
    • However, this cost will be offset by the substantial rent savings in Bengaluru.

“While the company has been flexible for now, we have all been mandated to relocate to Bengaluru by the end of November or early December,” a Zepto employee said

Bengaluru: The Right Choice for Zepto

Zepto’s choice of Bengaluru aligns with its growth strategy:

  1. Proximity to Rivals:
    • Bengaluru hosts several large multinational companies (MNCs) and new-age startups.
    • Zepto will be in close proximity to rivals such as Swiggy and Zomato, both of which have offices in the same neighborhood.
    • This geographical advantage fosters healthy competition and collaboration.
  2. Tech Ecosystem:
    • Sarjapur, HSR, and Bellandur—where Zepto is finalizing its new property—are bustling tech hubs.
    • These areas house tech parks and attract talent from across the country.
    • Zepto’s presence here positions it at the heart of India’s tech innovation.

Zepto Hiring Plans

Of the 1,700-1,800 Zepto employees, around 1,000 are in Mumbai, 400 in Bengaluru and 300 are scattered around different regions, looking at city operations.

“Of the total 1,000 employees in Mumbai, around 90 percent are already willing to move and the remaining are in discussions to relocate.

If all goes to plan, just 5-7 percent of the 1,000 will be unable to move to Bengaluru,” the person cited above said.

That is a risk Zepto is willing to take since it believes it is a growing company, which makes it easier to attract talent. Successive funding rounds only help Zepto’s case further.

A bulk of its future hiring will happen for and from Bengaluru. Zepto co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha said the company planned to hire 500 employees for the corporate side and increase total strength to around 2,200-2,300.

Summing Up!

Zepto’s headquarters relocation signifies more than just a change of address—it’s a strategic move toward efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and growth.

As the company unites its teams in Bengaluru, it embraces the vibrant tech ecosystem and sets the stage for continued success.
