Nothing CEO Carl Pei's Take; In-Office Work Is Non-Negotiable
Nothing designs and manufactures products where collaboration plays a crucial role. Face-to-face interactions foster creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Remote work, according to Pei, doesn’t fully support this collaborative spirit.

In a bold move that has sparked debate across the tech industry, smartphone brand Nothing—founded by Carl Pei—has made it mandatory for all its employees to return to the office.

Carl’s decision reflects a departure from the flexible work arrangements that became commonplace during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nothing: The Email Announcement

In an email sent to all employees, Carl Pei explained his rationale behind this controversial shift.

He acknowledged that it might not be a fit for everyone but emphasized that it aligns with Nothing’s business goals and vision. Here are the key points from his email:

Collaboration Matters: Nothing designs and manufactures products where collaboration plays a crucial role. Face-to-face interactions foster creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Remote work, according to Carl, doesn’t fully support this collaborative spirit.

Resource Constraints: Nothing operates in a competitive landscape, and Carl recognizes the need to do more with fewer resources. In his words, “We need to solve difficult problems and do more with way less resources than competitors.” Being physically present in the office facilitates efficient decision-making and resource allocation.

High Ambition and Speed: Carl’s email emphasized that remote work is incompatible with Nothing’s high ambition level and need for speed. The company aims to be a generational tech powerhouse, and Carl believes that in-person work is essential for achieving that goal.

Carl, in his mail said, “I know this is a controversial decision that may not be a fit for everyone, and there are definitely companies out there that thrive in remote or hybrid setups.”

“But that’s not right for our type of business, and won’t help us fully realize our potential as a company. There are three key reasons for this,” he added.

Employee Reactions

Carl acknowledged that work-from-office arrangements might not suit everyone. He encouraged employees to find an environment where they thrive.

Simultaneously, he emphasized that Nothing seeks individuals who are willing to go the extra mile in the company’s journey over the coming decades.
