Punjab University in Chandigarh has introduced menstrual leave provisions for female students starting from the upcoming semesters in the academic session 2024-25.
Menstrual leave is provided to acknowledge and accommodate the physical and emotional challenges that individuals may experience during menstruation.
The menstrual leave allows individuals to take time off to rest, manage their symptoms, and prioritize their health without the added stress of worrying about attendance or productivity.
This move aims to accommodate the needs of female students, acknowledging the challenges and discomfort they may face during menstruation.
By offering this leave option, Punjab University endeavors to create a more inclusive and supportive academic environment, ensuring equitable opportunities for all students.
The conditions for menstrual leave at Punjab University
- The decision, greenlit by the university’s vice-chancellor, allows students to take one leave per calendar month of teaching, provided that teaching sessions have been conducted for at least 15 days.
- The leave allowance applies exclusively to teaching days, excluding all examination periods, be they internal or external, mid-semester or end-of-semester exams, or practical examinations. During these examination periods, the menstrual leave will not be applicable. This stipulation ensures that the leave policy is tailored to academic teaching schedules, preserving the integrity of examination periods and academic assessments.
